About us

The Swan Valley Adventure Centre (SVAC) is one the one of the best outdoor educational and recreational centres in WA. It is located within the Perth metropolitan area, on a unique 89 acres of stunning Swan Valley wilderness. Swan Valley Adventure Centre has 6 camp houses accommodating up to 294 guests. The adventure centre features over 20 outdoor activities promoting educational outcomes, teamwork and enjoyment for all. All activities are linked to the Australian curriculum. We use experiential learning to develop the students in a variety of outcome-based activity programmes, such as leadership, problem solving, etc.

About the role

We have an opportunity for a Senior Instructor to act as 2IC to the Activity Manager in delivering all SVAC activities, including leading an activity team, to create a professional and safe environment. This is a full-time permanent position.

The Senior Instructor will be leading and supporting the instructional staff to maintain a high standard delivery of activity sessions and customer service to our clients to achieve outstanding results. They will be supporting the activity manager to ensure that all the operating and safety management procedures are in place. In addition to this, they will be assisting the review and updating of risk assessments, monitoring of incidents and maintaining strict workplace health and safety standards. An integral part of the role is the maintenance of the activity equipment. There is also an opportunity to think creatively and to work with the activity manager to develop the existing activity portfolio and develop new activity sessions and products. Due to the nature of the business operations, working weekends or evenings might be required.

Ideally, the successful candidate will have the following attributes

  • A minimum of Cert IV in Outdoor recreation or equivalent experience
  • Nationally recognised qualifications in roping, canoeing and kayaking
  • One higher level instructor qualification, such as ACIA guide or instructor, Australian Canoeing white water instructor – desirable
  • Higher level of canoeing/kayaking qualification will be considered advantageous
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar role in outdoor education, leadership and/or recreation
  • Sufficient competence in your specialist activities to be able to support and teach others undertaking the activity
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of outdoor education
  • Ability to perform to a high standard in all activities
  • A commitment to deliver exceptional customer service
  • Excellent leadership, group management and communication skills
  • The ability to empathise and support individuals in situations which are physically and emotionally demanding
  • Reliability and good time keeping skills
  • Enthusiasm for the outdoor environment
  • Energy, stamina and physical fitness (to be able to do the activities)

In addition to this, our Senior Instructor must hold a current Working with Children Check, a valid National Police Certificate and a current First Aid Certificate.
